This image came up on my memories today so I thought I’d write some tips about being a demo chef.

One aspect of my job as a consultant that has been a lot of fun is that of a demonstration chef, for companies that have product launches, press days food festivals and trade shows.

As a demonstration chef, your role is not only to showcase your culinary skills but also to promote and highlight your client's products.

Menu Planning:

Collaborate with your client to design a menu that aligns with their goals and showcases their product effectively. keeping in mind the target audience, event theme, and any dietary restrictions or preferences.

Create a balance between your signature dishes and incorporating the client's product in innovative ways. Make sure you have all the correct allergy information on display

Recipe Development:

Develop detailed recipes for each dish you plan to demonstrate, Making sure the recipes are clear, concise, and easy to follow. Include variations or alternative ingredients to accommodate different skill levels or dietary needs.

Add personal or regional touches or unique twists that reflect your culinary expertise and make the recipes stand out.

Ingredient Sourcing:

Coordinate with the event organisers and your client to ensure the availability of all necessary ingredients. Identify any specific or local ingredients that enhance the authenticity or uniqueness of your dishes. Pay attention to freshness, quality, and sourcing ethics to create the best culinary experience.

Equipment and Set-Up:

Familiarise yourself with the kitchen setup and equipment at the venue. Communicate with the organisers in advance to ensure they provide the necessary tools. Bring any additional equipment or specialty items you might need. Arrive early to set up your workstation, organize your ingredients, and test the equipment for a smooth demonstration.

Presentation:

Prepare an engaging script that highlights the key features and benefits of your client's product. Rehearse your presentation to ensure a confident and polished delivery. Share interesting facts, anecdotes, or stories related to the dishes, ingredients, or culinary techniques. Encourage audience participation, answer questions, and provide practical cooking tips.

Time Management:

Create a schedule or timeline for each dish to fit within the allotted time slot. Practice your cooking process to understand the time required for each step. Be mindful of the time during the demonstration to maintain a smooth flow and ensure you cover all the dishes and important information.

Plating & Presentation:

Pay attention to the visual appeal of your dishes. Use artistic plating techniques, garnishes, sauces, or decorative elements to enhance their presentation. Explain the reasoning behind your plating choices, and share tips on how the audience can elevate their own presentations at home. Aim to create Instagram-worthy dishes that captivate the attendees.

Sampling and Tasting:

If permitted by the event's setup, offer tasting samples of your dishes to the audience. Ensure that the samples represent the flavors and quality of your cuisine and highlight the unique qualities of your client's product. Use this opportunity to gather feedback, answer questions, and create a memorable taste experience for the attendees.

Networking & Promotion:

Take advantage of the event to connect with attendees, fellow chefs, and industry professionals. Engage in conversations, exchange contact information, and follow up after the event to build valuable connections. Utilize social media platforms, local media outlets, and your own marketing channels to share highlights from the event, including photos, videos, and testimonials. Promote your culinary expertise and the clients' products to attract potential customers or clients.

Remember to be passionate, enthusiastic, and approachable throughout the event. Your goal is to inspire and educate the audience while leaving a lasting impression of your culinary skills and the unique qualities of your clients' products.
